Most visitors never leave the leeward beaches — and miss the wild half of the island entirely. Curaçao's national parks reveal a landscape of cactus forest, towering surf, and rare wildlife.
At 372 metres, Sint Christoffelberg is the island's highest point. The summit trail is short but steep and scrambly near the top; the payoff is a panorama of the whole island. Start at dawn — there's no shade, and the gate closes early.
Christoffel National Park shelters the rare Curaçao white-tailed deer, orchids, and dozens of bird species. Drive the marked loops slowly and quietly for the best sightings.
On the wild north coast, the Atlantic surges into a series of rocky pockets (boka). Boka Pistol erupts like a cannon when swells hit; Boka Tabla lets you stand inside a cave as waves thunder in. Sea turtles nest at quieter inlets in season.
Bring sturdy shoes, far more water than you think you need, and respect the barriers — the surf here is powerful and unforgiving.
