The True Story Behind Curaçao's Famous Blue Liqueur

curacaobusinessculturehistoryfood

The electric-blue liqueur on every beach-bar shelf has a surprisingly local story — and the original is still made the same way, on the island, from a fruit that grows nowhere else quite like it.

The Laraha orange

When Spanish settlers planted Valencia oranges in Curaçao's arid soil, the fruit turned bitter and inedible. But the dried peel proved intensely aromatic. That accidental fruit — the Laraha — is the soul of the liqueur.

Why blue?

The liqueur is naturally clear; the famous colour is added purely for theatre. Distillers also produce it in clear, orange, green, and red — same flavour, different drama.

Taste it at the source

At Landhuis Chobolobo, a restored 19th-century estate house in Willemstad, the Senior & Co. distillery still produces the genuine article. The self-guided tour ends, naturally, with a tasting.

Bring home a bottle of the real thing — and the story of how a failed orange became an island icon.
